Best-selling Author Guest Speaker

Alison Goodman

Best-selling fantasy/science fiction author Alison Goodman was a guest at my creative writing class in Ferntree Gully this term. She impressed my students with her experience of being discovered and published, and having her novel featured in Times Square over New Year, and with her information about book structure.

My Creative Writing course will be on offer again at CAE next year.

My graduate class continues into their sixth term with me at Coonara Community House in Upper Ferntree Gully… :-)

The Vermont South Community House Kids Creative Writing for 8-12 yr olds switches next year to Thursday afternoons.

Gaming Guest Speaker Inspires Students!

The Mastery Club® 10 Lessons Program finished yesterday at Ainslie Parklands Primary School.

Amy 1Amy 2Last week was our ‘Guest Speaker’ session. As all four boys were keen gamers and computer nerds(!), I found a guest speaker who would be right up their alley: an 18 year old girl who is studying gaming at the moment and has set and achieved some significant goals, including saving up for and buying her own specialist gaming computer quite a few years ago, teaching herself how to make games, and getting into the course of her choice. Now she is in the process of starting up her own studio!

Amy 3Amy 4Amy Blackley was also a Mastery Club fan a few years ago, and graduate of one of the first programs I ever ran, albeit when it was in a shorter format.

When I asked Amy if she'd like to be Guest Speaker, she responded very enthusiastically, adding:

'The Mastery Club shaped my childhood and in turn my life, it'd be an absolute pleasure if I could give something back.’

She certainly did. Amy made quite an impression on the boys, and they were still talking about her this week. One boy 'came out of retirement' (he’s been in serious school-refusal mode) to attend this session.

In yesterday’s final session we reviewed the entire program and I was quite impressed by how much they remembered – one boy in particular, who asked if the sponsors would pay for them to do the course again… :-)

The Mastery Club® 1:1 Coaching Hits All Subjects & Issues

The beauty of one-on-one Mastery Club coaching is that it’s tailor-made to your own child’s needs and issues, and that the principles and practices are applicable across the board of all school subjects, all hobbies, all challenges, and all relationships. My daughter won a 1:1 with Liliane through a competition she entered. Izzy wanted to gain some confidence in playing her guitar publicly. The guidance and advice she gained from Liliane was amazing, she delivered it in a way that my 9 year old could comprehend. After the session with Liliane it opened up discussion between her and I which was great. I highly recommend these sessions to enable our children to recognise and believe that there goals and dreams are achievable.

The Mastery Club Tip of the Month

"If you tell somebody stories about high achievement just before they perform some test or exercise, they will perform better than if you had not told them those stories. If you merely use the words, 'succeed', 'master', and 'achieve' in a sentence, they will do better."

- David Brooks, The Social Animal – A Story of How Success Happens
